Sleeping Beautiful!

July 24, 2018 Majella Wirth

Sleep.....we all know the important role it plays in our health and wellbeing, but it is during our sleeping hours that we can inflict extra damage to our hair.  Here are five easy tips to avoid damaging your hair while you sleep.

1.    Avoid sleeping with wet hair

The keratin in your hair is linked with natural hydrogen.  When your hair is wet water breaks down these hydrogen bonds making your hair weak and susceptible to damage.  The bonds are restored when the hair is dry again - this is why you can style your hair when it’s wet - however, to sleep on wet, weakened hair makes the strands very susceptible to damage.  So it’s best to take a few extra minutes with the hair dryer and make sure your hair is good and dry before hitting the pillow.

2.    Brush your hair out.

We’ve previously discussed the benefits of a great scalp brush, and it’s an important night time routine for your hair.  Tossing and turning during the night will add stress to your already tangled hair.  Brushing out your tangles before bed will give your hair a fighting chance against the stresses of tangles during the night.

3.    Give your hair an overnight dose of luxury oil

While you’re giving yourself that beautiful scalp brush, why not add some hair oil prior and turn it into a full overnight protectant for your hair?  Hair oil applied to the ends of your hair will hydrate and condition your hair while you sleep.

4.    Top knot it

Tie your hair up on the very top of your head - in front of the crown.  You can protect it from tangling and keep the ends out of the way of any friction that can be caused when your hair ends rub against bed linen.  Plus, you will avoid damaging tangles.  Just be sure to use a silk scrunchie or scarf to tie it up with.

5.    Upgrade to a quality silk pillowcase

Silk fibres are gentler on your hair and reduce the amount of friction that can happen with a cotton pillowcase.  Cotton can pull on your hair while you sleep.  The friction is what causes bed head and it can also have a devastating impact on your fresh blow wave or straightening.

So work these simple steps into your bedtime routine and give you hair a little pampering - it will thank you for it with less damage to the ends and longer lasting blow waves.

Way To Go Eco

July 2, 2018 Majella Wirth
Majella Stylist goodie bags.jpeg

As you are most likely aware, Queensland and Western Australia have been the latest states to ban single-use plastic bags with a view to a greater move to protect our wildlife, sealife and environment.  Statistics on the reduction of these bags in Queensland alone is staggering and it automatically leads to a personal stocktake of “what else can I do”?

Well, the good news is, if you are one of our beautiful clients in our styling room, you’re already doing that bit extra!  By choosing our services, you are supporting our efforts to create an eco-conscious business and in turn, support our eco and ethical suppliers; Lendan, Bodyography and I.C.O.N.  Here’s just a few ways of how, as a business and through our clients - as a community, we make a conscious effort towards protecting our environment:

1.  Our make-up packaging and its promotional material are printed on recycled material with soy ink.

Soy ink isn’t new, it’s been in commercial use since the 1970’s, but as we move towards less reliance on petroleum based products it is certainly a winner as it’s renewable and costs less to source - soy beans only require small amounts of irrigation, minimizing the load on the environment.  It is also biodegradable and easier to remove from paper in the recycling process.  It’s colours are more vibrant requiring less ink than petroleum based inks to produce the same quality.

2. Products used in our styling room are vegan and cruelty-free.

Through stocking the Bodyography, Lendan and I.C.O.N ranges, our clients benefit from quality natural ingredients and the surety that comes with using vegan, eco and animal friendly products.  This means that as there’s no chemicals, these products are easy on the environment as well as your skin, hair and scalp, and as they are paraben free, they let your hair hold it’s colour longer.  Plus there’s no testing on animals!!

3. We actively recycle.

Everything from product packaging, to the coffee pods - we recycle it all - and if you leave with one of our goodie bags, we ask that you recycle that as well.  They are stronger bags, can be used over and over, and can easily blend with your outfit of the day.

PS:  Don’t forget our Winter Workshop Giveaway - we are drawing one lucky winner each month of winter to win a Workshop for you and your friends.  When you attend an appointment during winter, you’re entered.  The more appointments, the more entries.

Congratulations to our first winner:  Tina B. from Murrumba Downs.

Is Natural Beauty Making a Comeback?

Enter to Win!

With several billion eyes across the world focused this past weekend on one woman - waiting feverously for their first glimpse of HER, her dress, her poise, and who she might really be outside of her television character.

It doesn’t appear there was much disappointment.

Meghan Markle’s character in the television show Suits, if you haven’t seen it, is a bright, savvy and talented young member of a large NYC law firm.  Her appearance matches:  perfectly tailored to-suit-her figure business attire, and hair and make-up that can say, “don’t mess with me”.

On her wedding day however, her dress was classic and her hair and make-up natural.  She was prepared for a TV event, yet, clearly the change in direction of her look was on her terms and not driven by Hollywood.

Light, dewy foundation that let us see her natural look, freckles and all.  Freckles - yes - while many women are doing their darnedest to hide “facial fingerprints”, Meghan’s were out and proud!

Completing her natural look was a light smudging on the eyes, lashes, mascara and a very soft lip.

So as Princess Katherine before her - among many others - that can crash a fashion house’s website and sell out a dress within the blink of an eye, will Meghan become a style icon?

Celebrity make-up artist, Nigel Stanislaus has given us a clue in his post-Royal Wedding statement:

“Women used to look like this, and then Instagram took over.”

So let’s raise our champagne glasses to highlighting our natural beauty with softer new make-up looks!

…AND THERE’S MORE….

To celebrate the new fashion direction in make-up looks, we are giving you the chance to WIN one of 3 WORKSHOPS!!

One winner will be drawn each month in winter.

To win a workshop for yourself and 7 friends, simply enter upon your next hair, beauty or nail appointment at our styling boutique - the more times you visit, the better your chances of winning.

So don’t forget to make your next appointment.

Brush 100 Times Each Day!

April 30, 2018 Majella Wirth
pink brushes.jpg

Growing up we were told to brush our hair at night - 100 strokes.  I sometimes look back and wonder was this to get me to sit still, bring my childish energy down and lull me into bedtime while practicing my counting?  Turns out there are many healthy hair benefits to a good brushing.

Brushing your hair with a good brush that stimulates your scalp will enhance blood flow and oxygen to the area, also to your hair follicles, encouraging hair growth.

It is important to find the right brush and brush all over focusing on your scalp.  Starting with the correct brush should give you the feeling of having had a scalp massage.

A good scalp brush will detangle your hair and distribute the natural oils from your skin.  These oils are the best moisturizer for your hair, giving you shining, healthy hair.

It doesn’t stop there.  Brushing also helps clean your hair, removing dead skin cells which is important, especially if you suffer from a dry scalp or dandruff.

So when is the best time for brushing and how often should we do it?

Brushing before you shampoo is always best as this will help break up any hair spray or other product you may have in your hair making your shampoo more effective.  As for frequency, that’s up to you and your busy lifestyle - once a day is enough but if you want to brush morning and night it won’t have a negative impact on the benefits.

Ask you hair salon for the best scalp brush for you - different brushes do different things so always seek the guidance of your stylist.

Oh, and that issue about brushing before bedtime to help induce sleep - well, yes - it sure is relaxing!

Until next month beautiful ladies!
