New year and a new decade - what looks do you need to make the most of it?

We’ve rounded up 2020’s beauty and fashion tips by your star sign.  Here’s what we know.

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

The first sign of the zodiac, of course, needs to make sure everyone knows, their place is at the front of the line.  Enter the decade Aries, declaring your confidence and femininity with your hair styled as a one-length bob and make sure you’ve always got a great shade of red lipstick in your purse to get you noticed first in every situation.  And because Aries loves to make a splash, don’t be afraid to mix bright and bold colours, textures and designs in your wardrobe style.

Aries style icons:  Keira Knightly, Victoria Beckham, Lady Gaga

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Taureans are ruled by Venus who rules all that is love, beauty and money and while hard workers, they love to relax and take in the serene surroundings.  Low-key glamour is the Taurus woman’s secret weapon.  They take the same look from a hard day at the office to dinner in cosy cafes with ease.  Wear your hair to reflect romantic glamour, deep rich colours and gently clip back with soft strands.  Earthy colours should fill your make-up bag and switch out your perfume with essential oils to keep you balanced and happy throughout the year.

Taurus style icons:  Audrey Hepburn, Cate Blanchett, Adele

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

The Twins mean you’re free-spirited and often incredibly busy pursuing all that takes your interest Gemini.  You are a social butterfly, full of curiousity that drives your transformations.   You look amazing with almost any hair style and you are often in the salon getting a new cut and look.  Your wardrobe and make-up should reflect your energy and enthusiasm, mixing casual looks with on trend accessories and a mix of pink-toned lipsticks to complete your outfit of the day.

Gemini style icons:  Helena Bonham Carter, Octavia Spencer, Nicole Kidman

Cancer (June 21 - July 22)

Cancerians are highly intuitive and emotional, which is why they have that hard shell to protect them.  This is reflected in your style which is often silhouetted shapes and low-key looks, never giving away too much of what’s under that shell.  But don’t be afraid to choose a bold colour if you are keeping your outfits monotone, let people know you’ve entered the room.  Your hair style is part of your shell, so wear it full and shaped around your face.  Keep your make-up in neutral tones to complement your outfit.

Cancer style icons:  Meryl Streep, Liv Tyler, Margot Robbie

Leo (July 23 - August 22)

The kings (well, queens) of the jungle certainly embrace their royal status and celebrate themselves.  As natural leaders, Leos like to set the pace and this is definitely reflected in your style.  2020 will be no different for Leo style, choose a show-stopping outfit from head to toe for every time you leave the house.  Curly hair is back in fashion, especially if you have tight curls, set them loose and free.  With the sun as your ruling planet, all shades of reds and warm earthy tones set you apart from the crowd so experiment with these in your make-up.

Leo style icons:  Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Mauboy, Mick Jagger

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Virgos are represented by the goddess of wheat, connecting them deeply to the material world bringing out the perfectionist in them.  With the emergence of a new year, Virgos are ready to let go of this desire and embrace their imperfections - our beauty is in our flaws and uniqueness and  a modern shag style for your hair will let you set your natural beauty alight.  Pull your outfits together from that wardrobe full of timeless classics, you are still pragmatic after all.

Virgo style icons:  Salma Hayek, Taraji P. Henson, Cameron Diaz

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Balance and harmony are at the heart of Libra, but ruling Venus with her desire for love, beauty and money mean Libras like to mix it up when it comes to the latest trends.  Take all that the latest fashion season has to offer, as your underlying ability to balance will ensure you will pull it off.  Libra’s are most likely to work 2020’s short hair styles - the new pixie and short fringe - choose one, or choose both!  But remember, if you do go short, your make-up will need to provide the balance, so keep the eyeliner, mascara and lipstick always at the ready.

Libra style icons:  Gwen Stefani, Kate Winslett, Olivia Newton-John

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

Passionate and powerful Scorpios can act like a fire sign, but they really are into the long game to achieve their goals - happy to wait and put in the hard work, you know how to strike at just the right time.  Scorpio’s enigmatic, beguiling personality is often found in your style choices.  Working a simple black dress or power suit is just fine, so long as you finish it with some statement heels or jewellery.  Scorpio’s 2020 hair style should be one length, to keep your look unexpected.

Scorpio style icons:  Delta Goodrem, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Sagittarians have a thirst for knowledge and love a thrill-seeking adventure.  Being a fire sign you have that amazing knack to create a simple style that makes you shine.  This means Sags can take it easy in 2020 and use your everyday wardrobe staples to turn out bold looks and fashion trends without having to spend or do a lot.  Think sneakers, long skirts and basic tees, just keep it all accessorised.  Take your pick of 2020’s hair styles and looks, from long to short to shaggy or big.  Have fun with it!

Sagittarian style icons:  Taylor Swift, Zoe Kravitz, Tiffany Haddish

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)

Capricorns are sure-footed, steady and can achieve pretty much anything they put their mind to.  So it’s no surprise that your style holds itself up against fashion fads.  Take your well-earned value piece from your wardrobe and pull together that stand-out look.  Mixing casual pieces into a fashion statement is a theme in 2020, so Capricorns will look runway ready without even trying.  Our recommended 2020 hair style for Capricorns is a short, choppy bob and soft neutral make-up tones to match your no-fuss style.

Capricorn style icons:  John Legend, Diane Von Furstenberg, Michelle Obama

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)

Free-spirited and sometimes, eccentric, Aquarians are known for their off-beat fashion sense.  You love to make a splash, however this is balanced with your humanitarian sensibilities and desire for social progress.  As we being a new decade, more and more of the fashion industry are signing on to social change, from better working conditions to reduction in carbon footprints, meaning you can shop guilt free for those unique and quirky pieces you love.  The short pixie is the perfect hair style for your sense of the unconventional.  Most of you don’t even sign up for the societal constraints of make-up, but if you do, we suggest soft neutral tones to let your natural attitude shine through.

Aquarius style icons:  Jennifer Aniston, Isla Fisher, Oprah Winfrey

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

One of, if not the most creative sign in the Zodiac, Pisces need little advice or direction when it comes to style.  Pisces can take the simplest of outfits and make it stand out amongst the crowd - you could wear a sack and make it look couture!  To match your sensitivity and mystique, the modern shag is the hair style for you in 2020, soft and alluring, it will complement any look you pull together.  Your creativity and ability to express yourself artistically will determine what make-up looks you need to work with the rest of your outfit.  So Pisces, we will leave you to it!

Pisces style icons:  Rhianna, Rebel Wilson, Juliet Binoche

Here’s to a fashionable and beautiful 2020!

See you next month.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

As December draws to a close we are not only saying goodbye to 2019, we are farewelling one decade and looking forward to what the 20’s have in store for us.

The last time we had a 20’s it delighted us with a significant shift in fashion, hair styles, accessories and music and dance - all defining an era of celebration and a cultural shift, especially for women.

Will the 2020’s deliver for us the way the 1920’s did?

Predictions for this next decade include peplums, giant puffy shoulders and stripes…. hmm, anyone having 80’s flashbacks? But there also appears to be a homage to the 70’s with distinct design elements of that era including flares and wide lapels having been spotted on runways recently.

Stylists are yet to report on what hair styles and make-up looks we can expect but so far it looks like the 20’s will have some fun fashions and great options in store for us.

From all of us at Majella Stylist, we wish you a wonderful, safe, happy Christmas and New Year. Thank you for choosing to be our client in 2019.

We look forward to seeing you back in our Styling Boutique in January.🎄

Party Looks for the Holiday Season

December 1, 2019 Majella Wirth

December is upon us and before we know it there will be invitations in our inboxes to celebrate the year that’s passing and the new one right around the corner.  It’s also time to start planning your party season looks.

The Queensland climate let’s our daytime looks go to night time with significant ease, with accessories being the key to letting one or two outfits work for the entire holiday season.  A change of earrings, rings and bracelets can turn casual look to cocktail in an instant.  Same for your shoes - espadrilles will give your a great brunch to afternoon BBQ look and just swap those for strappy heels for evening.

Up-do hair styles or a simple, high pony tail will give you the same day to night transition with little need to adjust - just pull your look together and hold with a trusted brand hair spray.

As always, your make-up is important to bring your look together and you should choose a good foundation that lets you look great all day.  Consider one that gives you a dewy glow, especially with our humid afternoons, this will keep your look soft and youthful.

Colours are continuing from the spring trend; pinks are definitely in, strong, bold hues, and white is always a great option for any summer party, day or night.  Sequinns are definitely the statement this year.

Enjoy the party!

Are You Ready For Spring Carnival?

We are just a few short weeks away from Spring Carnival - definitively the highlight of the Australian fashion calendar.

Since “Fashions on the Field” were introduced in 1962 it’s been the focal point of setting fashion trends on the Australian scene.  Breaking dress standards and norms from Jean Shrimpton’s famous arrival in a “mini” skirt and sans hat and gloves, to pant suits, to reinvigorating the millinery industry, Spring Carnival has always delivered on front page fashion headlines.

So what should we expect, and plan for in our outfit, for this year’s race meetings and Cup Day?

Fashion bible, Vogue, suggests going bold with statement colours and even experimenting with some colour-clash for Cup Day!

Derby Day traditions should be respected, so leave all hints of colour in your closet for the rest of the week and consider only black, only white, or a fabulous mix of the two.  The Trendspotter also suggests this year, to choose a nice sleek hat over a fascinator.

Elle magazine took it to the designers who suggested primary coloured pant suits, bright silk scarves instead of a hat or fascinator, and asymmetrical dresses to get you fashion forward for Oaks Day.

But most important of all, don’t leave your hair and make-up plans to the last minute.  We put considerable time into planning our outfits for Spring Carnival, but getting the right look critically depends on having your hair work with your hat, fascinator and other accessories, as much as your make-up needs to complement and not detract from the rest of your outfit.

Be sure to make an appointment with your hair stylist and make-up artist prior to Cup week and get their advice on how to wear your hair and what colours to bring into your make-up for the day so you can achieve that winning look.

Here’s to backing the winner!
